Beaches: In Speightstown you have the long Heywoods beach, part of it just over the road from the apartment; famous is also Mullins Beach and many others further to the south. We loved the beach south of the Lonely Star Hotel (excellent but expensive dining). All beaches are open to the public and access is a right for everybody. Properties which front onto a beach may own the land to the high-water mark only. So you can stroll along the beach even in front of very expensive hotels. Famous golf courses in easy driving distance (Royal Westmoreland, Sandy Lane), less prominent ones nearby.

Visits: See North Point (Flower Cave) and the Scotland District with Bathsheba on the East Coast, offering breathtaking views of the sea. Drive southwards to the Barbadian heritage Codrington College. Harrison's Cave in the center of the island is an amazing gallery of stalactites and stalagmites. See Orchid World, or Wildlife Preserve, or ...... Visit also the 300-year-old Sunbury Plantation House, the only great house on Barbados where all the rooms are open for viewing. This house features mahogany antiques, old prints and a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages. Highly interesting is a visit of the Mount Gay rum distillery in Bridgetown, where you learn how rum is made from sugar cane. Visit also the Sugar Museum (near the Portvale Sugar Factory, just off Highway 2A), a permanent record of how sugar was produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. VISIT BARBADOS DURING THE FIRST WEEK IN AUGUST, THE PEAK OF THE CROP OVER FESTIVAL.

Eating, drinking, and related enjoyments: Close to the apt. is Fishermans Pub, where you get a great lunch/dinner for a fair price; we also recommend to dine at Grootes in Holetown (opposite the entrance to Coral Reef Club): very good value for a great price. Higher priced restaurants with a very pleasant atmosphere are Mangos (in Speightstown center) and the Fish Pot, on the sea about 2 km north of the apartment. Very good is also the restaurant/bar Zaccios (formerly Cocomos) in Holetown. BA says, its the third best beach bar in the whole world .... In Bathsheba, well known restaurants with great views are Edgewater Inn, Round House, Atlantis Hotel. See the capital Bridgetown and sip a cocktail or dine at the Waterfront Cafe in the middle of town. Visit the Oistins Fish Market. Each Friday and Saturday night hundreds of locals and visitors go to Oistins for the Fish-Fry, an opportunity to enjoy the best local food - fried and grilled fish, fish cakes, sweet potato, and much more. Be early to find a parking place.
