A special feature of this beautiful trail at river’s edge is the ton of big boulders along this stretch of the river. If you can resist the temptation to crawl and climb the rocks downstream, the trail itself is moderate and can be done in about 2 hours round-trip.

Ski: Hikers enjoy a series of spectacular views of the famous Gold Rush era river, past the infamous China Wall built by Chinese laborers; several mine shafts, and other early signs of mining. In the spring, a beautiful wildflower display enhances the hike. At a brisk pace, the hike can be done in four hours. — Alta Sierra Biblical Gardens Taking the “back road” over the Bear River via scenic country lanes, the Biblical Gardens are about a ½ -hour drive from BRR on highway 49 between Auburn and Grass Valley. Opened in 1976, the result of inspiration and dedicated effort of John and Verna Sommer, the gardens are nestled among aging oaks and soaring pine trees on Auburn Road, a historical wagon trail during the Gold Rush days. Now, where horse-drawn freight wagons and stage coach drivers once traveled, modern day visitors find the peace and tranquility of God’s creation - seasoned with the serene sound of the forest, the babbling brook, and the joyous song of birds.

Golf: A plethora of paths leads to numerous swimming and fishing holes. — Stevens Trail The trail head begins about 2.5 miles from BRR. Its origins date back to the Gold Rush days, but now it yields a fortune in natural beauty. Historically, the trail connected the town of Iowa Hill with the city of Colfax. Developed by Stevens, an Easterner who showed up in 1859 to look for gold but decided rather than brave the hard work of gold-panning and the ruthless claim-jumpers, he’d let others search for gold. Whether they found it or not, Stevens charged them a toll for using the trail he had built. The current trail extends 4.5 miles along the northwestern slope of the North Fork of the American River Canyon. It begins in Colfax and ends at the confluence of Secret Ravine and the North Fork of the American River. The Stevens Trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horse back riding.

Guest Book: On the mile-long meandering path that winds its way through the lush greenery, visitors are reminded with scripture plaques, stone statues and wooden hand carvings of the life of Christ. The Gardens are open daily, weather permitting, from sunrise to sunset. Benches are placed throughout the Gardens where visitors may rest, reflect and allow the serene peace and tranquility to nourish their soul. The self-guided walk takes approximately 90 minutes. — Weimar Institute This holistic health center, about 5 miles from BRR, offers a well-mapped series of various hikes from moderate to difficult. In a setting under the pines this quiet area appeals to a wide range of hikes and horseback riders. (Bikes are not allowed.) Open dawn to dusk. — Empire Mine 4.5 miles North on hwy 174 from BRR.
