Fast Facts: 1) The Ute Indians originally lived here and called the Aspen area ‘The Shining Mountains’ for the great abundance of silver deposits. It eventually became known as Ute City until the name was changed to Aspen in 1880. It soon became the most productive silver mining area in the country. 2) The world's largest silver nugget, weighing approximately 2,000 lbs, was found in Aspen, Colorado’s Smuggler Mine in 1894. 3) Aspen's tiny yet chic population is heavily sprinkled with the rich and famous and many more come to visit for the Rocky Mountain skiing. Residents include Michael Douglas, Kevin Costner, Jack Nicholson, Cher, and Goldie Hawn. 4) In 1997 Snowmass ski resort in Aspen opened Cirque lift, creating the nation's longest ski lift-served vertical rise of 4,406 feet. Snowmass constructed the lift to be ecologically sound and to protect local wildlife and habitat, while using renewable wind energy to create the power supply.
Aspen Ski Slopes: Perhaps due to Aspen’s glamorous reputation, its adventurous nature is sometimes overlooked. Aspen also draws skiers and snowboarders from all over the world who couldn't care less about what's going on down in town. They come for the slopes, which have received rave reviews for decades.
