The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument: The John Day Fossil National Monument has 3 units, all easily reached by scenic roads that pass through spectacular landscapes. The Painted Hills, poetically beautiful at any time, are only 15 minutes away from Mitchell and provide a glimpse of this areas ancient history. The second unit called Sheep Rock is about a 40 minute drive away and is the location of the Thomas Condon Visitor Center and Museum of Paleontology. A great place to see fossils and replicas of prehistoric plants and animals. Its great for children of all ages. Not far from there is the Cant Ranch House presenting the historical aspect of area with artifacts from pioneer days. The Blue Basin is a favorite of ours. Its a mile from the visitor center and has excellent hiking paths through amazing rock formations in all shades of greens and blues. The 3rd unit is found near the town of Fossil and is called the Clarno Formation, gigantic rock palisades made from volcanic mud and lava flows millions of years ago.

The John Day River: The John Day River is one of the longest un-dammed rivers of North America. It flows wild and free through canyons, gorges, and picture-book wilderness, passing incredible rock formations and rugged landscapes, pastures, and sandy river beaches. The John Day River is magical in all the seasons, and is inviting you to explore, discover,hike, swim, raft, and fish. There are many areas off the beaten track where you can experience the river in all its glory, no matter what the season. There are many places along the John Day River beds that ares brimming with wild life, rare birds and plants. There is always something to see. In winter the river is often frozen and has a different kind of beauty. In spring it is swollen with melting water from the mountains and rushes through the valleys with a powerful force. Summer its rafting time and taking a cooling plunge from the rocks into a swimming hole. We would love to show you our favorite river spots!

The Ochoco Wilderness: The Ochoco wilderness is a short drive away from Mitchell and has much to offer through all the seasons, from cross country skiing to fishing in a clear mountain lake. There are various snow-parks, protected wilderness recreation areas, and hiking paths through old forest growth. The Lucky Strike Mine is located there, a great place for the kids , where you can find thunder eggs and other great rocks.
