There is quite a bit of 'public' access to the lake: Donner Memorial State Park, beach and museum, is on the east end of the lake and on the other end is the West End Beach. Being at the center of some of the best snow skiing and snow boarding in the Sierras, makes Donner Lake a very popular place. Donner Lake is less than a half hour from: Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Tahoe/Donner, Boreal and Soda Springs.

In addition to the above, Royal Gorge and the Donner Memorial State Park have trails for hikers, cross country skiers, snow shoe enthusiasts and sledding and tubing.
