Peaks Island House Details
Activities range from relaxing on the wrap-around porch to biking (there's a rental shop on the island), jogging, walking, or roller-blading around the island's approximately 4.5-mile perimeter road -- as you keep refreshed by sea breezes and enjoying the natural scenery. You'll see lovely vegetation, wildflowers, the surf, and a variety of birds. And you'll see the waterways being plied by lobstermen, sailboaters, the occasional windsurfer, and kayakers. Or you might be the more laid-back walker who can take in the same beautiful vista and sea breezes, or you might try one of several trails through the woods that can lead to WWII bunkers and look out towers. Along the Island's shore road there are benches to sit and take it all in. From the decks of the island's four wonderful restaurants, you can enjoy a fresh lobster roll while viewing the tranquil harbor or watching the sunset behind the Portland skyline. Occasionally the sun can be seen setting behind Mt. Washington.
Other activities and places of interest are the pancake breakfasts, craft and art shops and shows, churches and club fairs, the Civil War museum, and the gift shops. Picnicking on backshore at Whaleback or Tablerock or some other spot while taking in the view of the North Atlantic and the several islands that are just north of Peaks might be the thing for you to do. When you finish doing these activities you can probably find time to buy fresh lobsters from an island lobster man. If you feel island-bound, the City of Portland is only a 15 - 17 minute ferry ride away. There, another array of activities such as tour boats, charter fishing, movies, malls, museums and more fine restaurants are available. A popular attraction is the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox's Double-A minor league team, the Portland Sea Dogs. If a summer vacation is not available to you, then Fall with its foliage and sunny days is also a fine time to vacation on the island.
Peaks Island is the perfect place to do something or to do nothing but relax.
