Rockwood Cabin Details
Fishing details:: A glance at any map reveals a number of bodies of water ranging in size from Moosehead Lake to ponds of only a few acres. There is plenty of action for spin casters as well as for fly casters; for novices and for experts. Some waters are easily accessed by car while others require some hiking and carrying. Among the popular species are bass, perch, trout, salmon, and togue. Although Maine has an energetic stocking program, many of the waters contain wild fish - a pleasure to catch and to see. If this is your first time fishing in the Moosehead area, we recommend the use of a guide who will be able to help you achieve your goals and will offer a wealth of information on the great outdoors in general. Basic fishing outfits can be purchased from several stores in town. Be sure that you have a license and an up-to-date fishing regulation book.
Hunting Details:: The Moosehead Lake region offers many exciting opportunities for hunters of all ages. Our region teems with wildlife and affords hunters a vast amount of terrain in which to spend a few hours, a day, or a week. Some popular species of animals to hunt include partridge, rabbit, deer, bear, and moose. Each of these has a specific legal hunting season and set of regulations, which can be found at the website listed below for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. There are many reputable local guides to help achieve the best hunting experience possible. If this is your first time to the Moosehead area, we recommend the use of a guide. Be sure that you have a license and an up-to-date hunting regulation book from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. You may also visit the website to apply for special hunting permits. Resident and Non-Resident licenses are available at many area establishments as well.
Wild Life watching:: The Moosehead Region hosts a great variety of wildlife habitats over a relatively small area. The region is ideal for birding and viewing other wildlife including black bears, coyotes, deer, foxes, beavers, otters and moose. At least twenty species of warbler breed here. Bicknell's Thrush occurs on area peaks above 3,000 feet. Other hard-to-find bird species thrive in the area, including the spruce grouse, boreal chickadee, gray jay, black-backed woodpecker, and white-winged crossbill. Enjoy watching the birds and the abundant wildlife as a wilderness experience in our lakes, streams, bogs, and forests. Some of the birds that may be seen at area feeders and in yards are: chickadees, sparrows, finches, grosbeaks, woodpeckers, nuthatches, mourning doves, juncos, cardinals, hummingbirds, phoebes, jays, and robins. If you take a walk on one of our hiking or nature trails (click on Hiking), you are likely to see grouse and pileated woodpeckers in the woods, plus bobolinks.
Ski: Alpine Skiing... Located on Rt. 15 just a few minutes North of Greenville, Squaw Mountain has one of the most spectacular views of any mountain in the East. With a 2000' triple chair, a 6000' double chair and a 1750' vertical drop, Squaw Mountain is suitable for both first timers and competitive experts. Winter in Moosehead is not just for snowmobilers. More and more people are discovering the joys of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There are more then 100 miles of groomed ski trails just for you, along with miles and miles of ungroomed possibilities for snowshoers. In the center of the Moosehead Lake Region is famous Moosehead Lake, which is surrounded by mountains, ponds, and forests. Those traveling via cross-country skis and snowshoes enjoy gliding through spruce and pine forests with incredible views of frozen waterfalls, mountains, ponds and lakes. These sports provide the perfect retreat for nature lovers wanting to catch a glimpse of moose, deer, eagles, rabbits an
Golf: Mt Kineo Golf Course is located on Moosehead Lake and is thought to be the second oldest course in New England, built in the 1880's.
