Pantheon History: The Pantheon (in Piazza della Rotonda) is one of the most impressive buildings in Rome. The building was originally dedicated as a temple to the twelve Olympian gods. It was built on the top of an earlier temple designed by Agrippa in 27 B.C. which was destroyed in 80 AD which was then rebuilt by Domitian but then burned and was destroyed again in 110 AD. In 127 AD Emperor Hadrian rebuilt it. The original rectangular temple, consisting of sixteen single granite columns became the porch for the newly devised dome structure. This is the first such dome structure known and it is probably the inspiration for every domed structure built in Rome.
