Saugatuck / Douglas Cottage Details
'GREEN' BUILT COTTAGE: This lovely cottage was remodeled using state-of-the-art green building practices intended to reduce its carbon footprint and to increase the comfort of its occupants. A two stage, high efficiency furnace with an integrated HEPA media filter helps reduce allergens in the air. Icynene foam insulation and Low E casement windows were used to create a thermally efficient building envelope. Toilets are dual flush, low volume fixtures to conserve water. Finish materials were procured locally with an eye toward sustainability including bamboo floors, concrete counter tops, cedar from managed forests and Hardipanel siding. The stairway is made of Ash wood salvaged from trees cut locally due ash borers disease. Kitchen cabinets are European alder, recycled from a high end showroom and reconfigured for the current layout. Appliances are Energy Star and all finishes are low VOC products to help improve indoor air quality for the chemically sensitive.
