More about the area...: The Isle of Palms, with its six miles of pristine white sand beaches, is as much a place of beautiful serenity for residents and visitors today as it was thousands of years ago for the Seewee Indians and hundreds of years ago for the colonists who followed. Being the birthplace of golf in America, Wild Dunes and the Charleston area abound with some of the top-rated courses in the nation. There are eco-tours, dinner cruises, and at the marina you can rent jet skis, or go para sailing. You can fish right in the resort or go deep water fishing. Bike rental is available in Wild Dunes and miles of Walk/Jog/Bike paths extend to reach every area in and around the resort. Even though the nearby shopping, dining and sight-seeing in Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island and the City of Charleston are great, most people are content to spend the majority of their time in The Wild Dunes Resort itself swimming in or watching the ocean and playing or relaxing on the beach.
If you love history, you can spend your entire vacation steeped in the history of Charleston and surrounding islands. Just go 5 minutes from Wild Dunes Resort toward Sullivan’s Island and you will cross Breach Inlet where the Hunley submarine was launched during the Civil War. Sullivan’s Island also has Fort Moultrie (British attack in 1776 repelled by colonists who then began a tradition of seacoast defense) and from there go 5 minutes further to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant where you can tour the USS Yorktown and see the Hunley. From Patriots Point it is only 5 more minutes to downtown Charleston where history abounds. The city of Charleston is a fascinating place to explore. Its Revolutionary War and Civil War history will be forever entangled in time and space with the city itself. Step back into the past and experience Charleston by visiting the local historic plantations and gardens.
Ski: Charleston’s history is evident throughout the city. Historic houses, churches, and forts throughout the area give visitors a glimpse into the past. Well-preserved architecture and furnishings help to document what life was like in Charleston’s early days. Guided tours are available and admission is charged at some attractions. Points of interest include the Aiken-Rhett House, Dock Street Theatre, Edmondston-Alston House, First Baptist Church (circa 1682, oldest Baptist Church in the South), Fort Sumter (first shot of the Civil War was fired on this fort), Joseph Manigualt House (c. 1843), Nathaniel Russell House (c. 1809), Old St. Andrews Parish Church (c.1706 and still in use), St. Michael's Episcopal Church (George Washington worshiped here in 1791), St. Philip's Episcopal Church (c. 1670; light was put in steeple to help guide ships to port) and many others! Guided tours are a good way to see the city and learn its glorious history at the same time.
Golf: See original plantation houses, gardens, slave cabins, smoke houses, and other remnants from plantation life. Beautiful parks in the area provide for a variety of outdoor recreational activities including hiking, picnicking, swimming, camping, boating, and fishing. You can visit Boone Hall Plantation, Charleston Waterfront Park, Charleston Tea Plantation, Charles Towne Landing, Cypress Gardens, Drayton Hall, Brook Green Gardens, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Middleton Place and many others! Charleston is proud of its natural, cultural, and military history and has done a remarkable job preserving it and interpreting it in the various museums throughout the city. Charleston is also a major center for the arts, with museums featuring American art from the 18th century through the present. Charleston’s museums and galleries offer visitors a broad perspective of the history and culture that have made Charleston what it is today. Points of interest include The Charleston Museum (the oldest museum in the US), The Citadel Museum, The Confederate Museum, Gibbes Museum of Art, Karpeles Manuscript Museum (houses the largest private collection of historically significant manuscripts in the world), Museum of the Common, Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon (visited by George Washington and jail house for pirates), Shem Creek Maritime Museum and Library, South Carolina Aquarium and many others!
Other Activities: 'Top Ten' US tennis resort by Tennis Magazine and 2 'Top 100' Golf Magazine Fazio courses
