Walk or ride a bike to and around the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. To the north of Town Lake, the Trail is 4 blocks from the downtown entertainment district and connects with Zilker Park and Barton Springs to the south.
The Capitol Metro bus to downtown and all connecting points leaves every 10 minutes during the morning commute and every 15 minutes at other times during the week from the West Mary/south 5th intersection.
The fare for an all day ticket is $1 - be sure to ask for a connecting pass if you are going further than Downtown.
The 'Alamo South Cinema' and the 'Saxon Pub' are 1/2 mile away - a short walk north on south Lamar from west Mary; on the way you will pass a pizza restaurant (Austin's Pizza), a Chinese restaurant (Suzy's), 3 Tex-Mex
restaurants including Maudies (everyone's favorite), the Saxon Pub, a Starbucks and some funky stores. Turn south on Lamar your first stop will be the world famous 'Horse Shoe Lounge'; shuffleboard anyone?
