The 'Wild Side' of the Island

Locals call the east side of the island the 'Wild Side' because it is the side that is exposed to the Caribbean Sea. As such, it has much larger waves, takes the brunt of any storm, and is more rugged looking. As a result of all that it is also totally undeveloped with no electricity or public services. However, it is also our favorite part of the island. The beaches are huge and gorgeous, there are tide pools to explore, the waves are fun, and you have it all to yourself. So plan on visiting the east side with your umbrella and towel and not much else. There are actually a couple of great restaurants on that side to serve lunch or dinner (they run on generators) so you don't need to bring any food. We promise you will love it.

SCUBA and Snorkeling

Jacque Cousteau discovered the 13 reefs lining the west side of the island in the 1960's and immediately named Cozumel one of the top 5 dive destinations in the world. Since then, the island has slowly developed, and now a full third of it's tourism is dive related. There are many excursions with many companies to run them, and many dive shops to outfit you if you need anything. Check out the owners website for more info. Great snorkeling can be found just about anywhere along the entire coastline. There are many sandy beaches around the island but there are also countless underwater outcroppings that serve as homes for a huge variety of sealife. No matter where you are, you'll see some beautiful underwater animals.

Golfing

Cozumel is privledged to have a course designed by Jack Nicklaus set into the Mayan jungle. It is about 20 minutes from the condo and is known as The Cozumel Country Club. You do not have to be a member to play there. Other courses can be found in Playa del Carmen, which is about 25 minutes away by ferry.
