Falmouth Cottage Summary

Imagine staying at a charming Cape Cod-cottage located at the end of a winding dirt road, sited on the edge of a tranquil saltwater pond with access to Vineyard Sound and surrounded by 5 acres of woodlands. If so, You have visualized our secluded and peaceful family retreat on the shores of Bournes Pond in E. Falmouth. It offers a truly traditional Cape Cod waterfront experience. It has a private beach w/dock, canoe and kayaks. Pond is rimmed by salt marshes which support abundant marine life, including clams, quahogs, blue crabs, fish --mostly schoolie stripers,--and a variety of shore and marine birds, notably ospreys in the spring, summer and fall. If you wish, you can easily reach Vineyard Sound by canoe or kayak or you can bring your own boat, launch it at a nearby public boat ramp located on an adjacent salt pond and tie it up at our dock. Vineyard Sound is 1.5 miles away from the dock while Menauhant Beach, a lovely public ocean beach on Vineyard Sound is 1.5 miles away.

The compact kitchen has a new fridge and stove. Upstairs there are two large bedrooms but only one is available for guest. The downstairs is fully winterized and centrally heated and the living room has a good sized wood burning fireplace. There is a dock, a canoe and kayaks. the pond is very suitable for swimming, boating and fishing. The pond is a salt water pond with a tide range of about 2 feet. It leads to vineyard Sound about 1.5 miles away. Access to the sound is through a breachway spanned by a bridge. The fishing is especially good in May, June and September when schoolie stripers along with some bigger stripers are feeding in the pond.

Falmouth Cottage Details

Leisure activities :swiming, boating, shellfishing: This property lends itself especially to fishing, boating, swiming and bird watching. There is a beach at the foot of the bank on which the house sits facing the salt pond. There is a dock extending from the beach. A canoe and kayaks are available for use. Swiming off the dock in the pond is delightful in the summer as the water is warmer than the ocean water. If ocean swimming is desired, it can be found at Menauhant Beach which is located at the end of the pond on Vineyard Sound some 1.5 miles away. The beach can be reached by canoe, kayak or by car. In the case of the latter the beach is about 2 miles away. Canoeing and kayaking on the pond is a delight. The Pond has an abundance of marine life, inclduing blue crabs which can be caught readly in July, August and September, clams and quahogs which can be found and dug in the shallow water along the shore of the pond. The latter is dependent on when shellfishing is opened on the pond.

Leisure activities : fishing: Striped bass are found in the pond from early spring to late fall. For the most part these are schoolie bass ranging from about 12' to 20+' with an occasional bass in the 30' range. The best fishing, if best is defined as easiest or most prolific, is in the spring and fall when the bass have just arrived or are getting ready to leave, the bait is most abundant, and the fish are hungry. Fly fishing or light tackle spin fishing is the finest and most exciting way to fish for stripers at these times, and in fact, throughout the season. Fishing can be done from the canoe or the kayaks, though fishing off the dock also yields results. Fishing can also be done at Menauhant Beach located at the entrance of the pond. Menauhant Beach is about 2 miles away. Charterboat fishing, both inshore and offshore, is avialble in Falmouth harbour and Woods Hole where a large number of charterboats dock. Depending on the season, the fishing can be spectacular.

Leisure activities : bird watching: Several feeders at the edge of the flower gardens surrounding the deck encourage the constant presence of a wide variety of birds; finch, cardinals, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, cat birds, tufted titmouse, mourning doves, among others, while the visible presence and distinct cries of Ospreys circling over the Pond from dawn to dusk is often experienced whenever one is on the deck. Several pairs of Ospreys nest on the pond and are always putting on a show circlinng above the pond looking for their next catch. In addition there is an abundance of shore birds to be seen from great blue heron to ducks, geese, mute swans, snowy egrets. Bird watching in the early morning while kayaking is especially rewarding.

Other Activities: kayaking, canoeing, fishing, crabbing, clamming
