Volcanic Attractions: In addition to touring Volcanoes National Park or hiking the county path to the new lava flow just 10 miles south of the cottage, you can enjoy all the volcanic features of the sunny Puna peninsula -- geothermal hot ocean ponds, lava-rock tidepools teeming with rainbow-colored fish and coral, a dramatic black sand beach where you can often swim with wild dolphins, and natural steam vents. For local shopping and dining, travel just 13 miles into Pahoa, which boasts numerous ethnic restaurants, a large health food store, weekly Farmers' Market and a supermarket and small shopping center. Just north of Hilo, you enter mystical rainforests to view magical waterfalls. Neighboring Kalani Oceanside Resort offers buffet-style meals and complete spa facilities.
Nearby Hilo - Hawaii's Second Largest City: Only 45 minutes away is Hilo, a beautiful city by the Bay, offering fine dining, shopping, museums, cinemas, numerous waterfall parks, popular Farmers' Markets with local produce and crafts. and numerous cultural activities including the Merrie Monarch Festival each April, the world's most renowned Hula Competition.
