IOP is one of South Carolina's barrier islands. It is long and narrow and bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The island's beautiful beach and the inland waterway offer a wide diversity of animal and plant life while providing endless recreational possibilities. IOP is home to many full time residents, part-time residents and thousands of visitors each year. In 2002, the City's beach was the first in SC to achieve the Blue Wave Designation from the Clean Beaches Council. Blue Wave is an environmental standard that indicates our beach is well managed and a clean family beach.
