Recreational Activities on US Government Property: Blue Ridge Parkway (BPR) Recreational Activities: The National Park Service permits bicycling, camping, climbing, fishing, hang gliding, hiking, hunting and photography in various areas within the Blue Ridge Parkway. For more information visit or call a Parkway ranger station. The closest station is at Gillespie Gap, BPR mile marker 331 at the intersection of NC 226. It is located behind the Museum of North Carolina Minerals on the west side of NC 226, Tel. (828) 765-6082. There is also a ranger station in Asheville, tel. (828) 350-3822. Pisgah National Forest: This is a large forest that covers much of the north and central western mountains of NC. It features some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain scenery, and some of the best recreational opportunities, in eastern North America. There is a National Park Ranger Station located in Burnsville, tel. (828) 682.6146
General Activities: Golfing: There are many public golf courses within an hour’s drive. The two nearest are Mount Mitchell Golf Club and Pro Shop and Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club. Each is approximately 20 miles from the cabin. Hiking/Rock Climbing: Mountain Adventure Guides Marshall, NC offers guided adventures. Hayrides: The Altapass Orchard is an historic apple orchard located on The Blue Ridge Parkway just north of highway NC 226 (BRP mile marker 331) at mile marker 328.3. Mineral Mining: At Emerald Village located on McKinney Mine Road in Little Switzerland, NC, tel. (828) 765-6463 (about 28 miles from the cabin) explore the historic Bon Ami Mine with it's authentic mining equipment, mine for gemstones in their fresh water flume, watch artisans cut and mount jewelry. White Water Rafting: USA Raft, Marshall, NC; French Broad Rafting Expeditions, Marshall, NC and Nantahala Outdoor Center, Hot Springs, NC all offer rafting.
Crusing the Blue Ridge Parkway: Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP): The 469 mile BRP connecting the Shenandoah and Great Smokey Mountain National Parks is one of the most scenic roads in America. The views are awesome in spring, summer and especially in the fall. During October the parkway is jammed with cars filled with “leaf lookers” who are enjoying the spectacular color show. There are numerous areas of interest along the BRP near Burnsville. The more popular ones are: Linville Falls (mile marker 316.4) are a series of beautiful waterfalls that drop water into Linville Gorge Altapass Orchard (mile marker 328.3), Crabtree Meadows (mile marker 340), Mt. Mitchell (mile marker 355.4) is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. The 85 mile clear day views from the observation tower are awesome. Craggy Gardens (milepost 364.4), Folk Art Center (mile marker 382) featuring work of mountain crafters. Take a jacket as the changes in elevation on the BRP may produce temperature variations of 20 or more degrees F.
