Through a dedicated and persistent effort by many, one third of Block Island is now protected through Block Island Conservancy, Block Island Land Trust, Nature Conservancy and other agencies. Countless maintained Greenway Trails exist for exploring the natural beauty of the island in it's rolling hills, stone walls and fresh water ponds. You can hike to off-road places with relative ease, with each more beautiful than the last. Every salt-water beach surrounding the island is public. There are over 300 fresh water ponds.
