Key West House Summary

From the moment you enter the gates to the private grounds of this graceful 1800's Key West Victorian Estate your senses will quickly awaken to a time in history when elegance and romance was abound. Completely hidden from the street, this renovated two and a half-story private Victorian mansion estate beckons you to wander through the mature tropical gardens, lounge on the stately double column porches, and refresh in the natural form pool. Once you enter the gated grounds, clocks seem to stop while you leave the hurry up world behind. This is one of the few large historic Victorian Key West homes built in the Bahamas by shipbuilders and then disassembled and shipped to Key West in the late 1800's. It was then reassembled where it now stands by skilled tradesmen of the time. This stately mansion took residence on the island during the time of early pioneers and the pirates of the Caribbean. The home was originally owned by eccentric adventurer French Count Dr. Odette Philippe.

Philippe was a Key West pioneer who established a lucrative cigar making company in Key West. Local lore declares that gold was once buried on the grounds by various recluse adventurers who took up residence at the property when Philippe owned the home. Today this historic home is one of the few large Victorian Mansion estates available for rent as a single family residence. The property is a spectacular treasure and an endearing reminder of those fanciful earlier days gone by. A stay at this special estate almost feels museum-like as it offers a unique opportunity to intimately experience first hand a slice of Key West architectural history.

Notes: The large 2nd floor porch is located right off the master bedroom to create a private veranda. The home has been renovated to offer all the creature comforts required of the 21st Century guest including central a/c, fully equipped kitchen, three full bathrooms, color cable TVs, stereo, fully equipped kitchen, and swimming pool. The home is nicely furnished with an eclectic collection of modern and antique furnishings, and original artwork.

Amenities: Swimming pool, color cable TVs stereo, central a/c, fully fenced expansive private grounds, pavilion, washer dryer, telephone, all linens and towels provided. Enjoy all of the original design work of handcrafted giant covered veranda porches, carved banister staircases, original Dade County pine floors and walls, high 12 foot ceilings on the first two floors, and original French windows and doors throughout to stream in the sunlight. There is private off street parking, but forget about a car. From here you can walk or bike everywhere. Just outside the gates of this secluded estate is in the heart of all Old Town Key West attractions. The location of this historic property is undoubtedly one of the most requested in the Key West. The property has a gas BBQ grill and a meat smoker for preparation of outdoor gourmet fare.

Activities: An added feature is a spectacular pavilion at the front end of the property facing the home for staging an intimate wedding ceremony, or just sunning in private luxury.

Area: Property is well suited to small wedding party, family gathering, or reunion of friends. Maid service available on request. Prime Old Town location only 1.5 blocks from Duval St. and the Historic Seaport Waterfont. Walk to all Old Town District features, and beaches. Situated in Key West's National Historic Register District this estate is just 1.5 blocks East from Duval St., and the 1.5 blocks South from the Key West historic seaport waterfront.
